Do-Nothing Congress Does Something!
Further Adventures of Indigo Red:
Pay Raise - 70 Cents for Little People, $4000 for Congress
It would be wrong to accept a pay raise before increasing the minimum wage, said campaigning Democrat leaders last year. Yes, indeed, it would be wrong. So, without any delay whatsoever, the very first order of business for the Democrat controlled Congress was to hike the minimum wage by 70 cents an hour. With that triviality out of the way, Congress was free to vote themselves a $4,100 raise.
Meanwhile...

I've always thought that raises for politicians should be voted upon as referendums (propositions, whatever) by voters at the polls on Election Day.
Private sector employees don't have the luxury of voting in their own pay increases, so why should those who are employed by same?
I have to confess that I have laughed in the faces of one or two liberals during political arguments (re the total lack of positive product from the incumbent majority on the Hill) when they blathered, "They raised the minimum wage!"
I hope this doesn't make me a bad person, LOL.
Referencing your link to Flopping Aces, what "deteriorating state of the economy?" I think the "deteriorationg state of the economy" is as big a myth as Global Warming!
I agree totally with Seth. Our Priest, who thankfully retired, tried voting himself a raise and was promptly, and properly, shot down by the Vestry. Of course he was a liberal! Those liberals sure do keep us on our toes.
It's a Major Award!
They've been so ineffectual this year, they have to be thrilled to have accomplished this much. Raises for everyone that counts. To put it on an equal scale, $.70 is about $1400/year.
"One for you. Three for me. One for you..."
And anyone who isn't in Congress and is already making more than the new minimum wage is left out in the cold.
Did Congress make the tax cut permanent yet? Just checking...
That "Christmas Story" lamp is a perfect award for our Do-Nothing Congress!
That first cartoon pretty well sums it up, "We've come to save you!" I could do with a little less rescueing, thank you very much.
One year as the majority and they have the minimum wage increase to show for it, a bit of legislation that affects 2% of the population. Hearty slaps on the back all around.
A $4000 dollar pay raise for Congress! I should email the PA Clean Sweep organizers to see if they will organize the same program to sweep congressional incumbents out of office.
Congress did manage, with strong bipartisan support, to successfully change the menu in the Capitol cafeteria.
"It would be wrong to accept a pay raise before increasing the minimum wage, said campaigning Democrat leaders last year. Yes, indeed, it would be wrong."
more important than it being wrong this statement is an acknowledgement that they are not deserving of a raise. if they were deserving of it they would not need to bring up the minimum wage issue to justify it.
