Politicizing Foreign Policy?!?

“Some seem to believe we should negotiate with terrorists and radicals, as if some ingenious argument will persuade them they have been wrong all along. We have heard this foolish delusion before. As Nazi tanks crossed into Poland in 1939, an American senator declared: ‘Lord, if only I could have talked to Hitler, all of this might have been avoided.’ We have an obligation to call this what it is – the false comfort of appeasement, which has been repeatedly discredited by history.”
-President Bush before the Israeli Knesset in a speech to celebrate Israel's 60th Birthday

So what exactly did he say that was so terrible?

The Obama campaign released a statement sharply criticizing Bush for these statements.

“It is sad that President Bush would use a speech to the Knesset on the 60th anniversary of Israel's independence to launch a false political attack,” it said. “George Bush knows that I have never supported engagement with terrorists, and the President's extraordinary politicization of foreign policy and the politics of fear do nothing to secure the American people or our stalwart ally Israel."

Obama has said several times while campaigning for the Democratic nomination he would meet with “friends and foes” of the United States, a position his rivals, including Hillary Clinton, have scolded him for holding.

“It’s time to end the politics of fear,” is one of Obama’s favorite responses criticisms pertaining to his open negotiation philosophy-- a refrain repeated in his Tuesday statement.

The White House contends the President’s “appeasement” reference was not specifically directed towards Obama. “There are many who have suggested these types of negotiations with people that the president, President Bush, thinks we should not talk to,” White House Press Secretary Dana Perino told reporters in Israel.

“I understand when you’re running for office you think sometimes the world revolves around you” Perino said. “That is not always true and it is not true in this case.”

Ouch.

Newsflash for Senator Obama: President Bush isn't running in '08; here's your political rival.

Here's my favorite part with rousing applause:

"Some people suggest if the United States would just break ties with Israel, all our problems in the Middle East would go away. This is a tired argument that buys into the propaganda of the enemies of peace, and America utterly rejects it. Israel's population may be just over 7 million. But when you confront terror and evil, you are 307 million strong, because the United States of America stands with you."

Oddly enough, Pres. Bush nailed it, whether it was purposely pointed at Obama or not.

What do you think of California approving gay marriage on Thursday?

Well...A coalition of religious and social conservative groups is attempting to put a measure on the November ballot that would enshrine laws banning gay marriage in the state constitution.

The Secretary of State is expected to rule by the end of June whether the sponsors gathered enough signatures to qualify the marriage amendment, similar to ones enacted in 26 other states.

If voters pass the measure in November, it would trump the court's decision.

California already offers same-sex couples who register as domestic partners the same legal rights and responsibilities as married spouses, including the right to divorce and to sue for child support.

What more is needed? When they talk of "equal treatment under the law", they have the same equal rights as I do: I'm allowed to marry a woman.

Why is there such a need to change society's definition of marriage?

Next we'll be marrying our pets.

I'm actually rather ambivalent over the issue, but tow the conservative line very well because I'm a partisan hack.

What is most aggravating to me, is California's Supreme Court overriding what California voters wanted, which was a ban on same-sex marriage.

Partisan hack aside, I was a bit surprised to hear that there are several Republicans on the Calif. Supreme Court. Who knew?!

I loved Bush's speech. It made me smile. They love him and the far left is stunned. I enjoyed the video from the McCain bus when McCain asked the reporter, well, what is it that Obama wants to talk to Hamas about anyway? HA! Gotta love McCain in moments like that.

I've started a post on this, too. Susan Rice made my blood pressure rise just listening to her try to dig Obama out of his hole on meeting with terrorists without pre-conditions, at the Presidential level.

Good post, Word.

As I've said on other threads, we may have to ask the White House to rephrase the remark that Israel can count on 307 million Americans.

Something tells me that Code Pink, Moveon.org and the rest of the surrender monkeys in the Dem party would disagree.

But then, I don't count them as Americans any more.

This is a classic case of "we think the world revolves around us" thinking from the Democrats. Pres. Bush was addressing Israel, HELLO, who is being told by almost the entire world that they should negotiate, no, give in, to a terrorist organization like Hezbollah! Give back the Golan Heights! Give up your birthright! The comment by Pres. Bush was in perfect context with Israel and its history.

Didn't John Kerry go to the Middle East 1 or 2 years ago and call the U.S. a baracuda?

This is basic counterinsurgency ops. You don't negotiate with unreconcilables, but with reconcilables.. those who show a willingness to change and bend.

Even if Bush were talking about Obama, he'd be 100% correct.
