Quag-Miered No More?
Well, looks like the Right-Wing Noise Machine got their wish. All I can say is I'm relieved, but also disgusted by the in-fighting, which I think, in some instances has been rather ugly, unfair, and character-assassinating (not all, just some); and I do think it has hurt the President at a time when he's already hurting. I think he'll recover and that those who were anti-Miers will support him now.
I am glad, though, that Harriet Miers withdrew her nomination. I don't think even her staunchest supporters were ever really pro-Miers; as Hugh Hewitt coins it, they were anti-anti-Miers.
I'm listening to Laura Ingraham as I type and I think she's been one of the worst in some of her criticism. Can't even see her own elitism on the end of her nose. I strongly disagree with her first criteria for nominating a judicial candidate. The President's record on judicial picks have been outstanding. And character assessment does count. It's served this President very well. You cannot always rely upon a "paper trail", to guarantee that who you pick will vote the way you expect him to vote.
Anyway, I'd type more, but I have to go to work.
I will say, I'm optimistic that the next nomination to replace Miers will be one the conservatives will be able to stand behind.

I love Laura Ingraham. She is bright, witty, and pretty. I want her to have my children. But she is an elitist, and that is maddening to me.
I wish I could be as optimistic as you about the post Miers future.
Our Barabas conservative friends who shouted so loudly for her withdrawal, are already fighting about her replacement.
And of course, they are blaming this whole mess on Bush for nominating Miers in the first place and falsely claim that they speak for "the base."
Well, I'm not sure which "base" they speak for, but the vast majority of persons who voted for Bush continued to support Miers.
A few more thoughts from my post on the subject:
*In the Miers debacle Republicans have turned the old rallying cry: "Give them an up or down vote"upside down.
*Republicans in the Senate have overturned the principle of protecting Executive Branch documents.
*After witnessing this latest episode can we know expect our GOP Senators to grow a spine and defend an even more controversial nominee?
*Chris Matthews summed it up this way: "Bush is lame duck with broken right wing."
Chris Matthews irritates me to no end...but that's gosh-darn hilarious!
Mark, I love Laura Ingraham as well (apparently not the way you do....(^_~)....), but she was harsh on the get-go, just as Bill Kristol was, before any history on Miers was known. Furthermore, the person we were years ago is not always a great barometer to judge the person we are today.
Anyway....upward and onward.
I think our President is pretty resiliant and will bounce back from this left wing attempt to arrest/and/or bring down everyone in top positions in his Cabinet, the House and Senate. It's an excellant strategy the left is going for here, but it should have been ours!
The cowards are aligning themselves for the next election. They will do so at the expense of their country for their own personal gain and the Party they say they support. Two many of our elected officials are like the "new guy" in prison.
