Quit waving the flag of the country you left, please

Because doing that is not the way to earn my sympathy and support.

This is how the Los Angeles Times wants you to remember the 500,000 protestors last Saturday in the city of Los Angeles:

Many protesters carried American flags as they marched.
(Gina Ferazzi / LAT)
Mar. 25, 2005

Uh....yeah. And many protestors also expressed their loyalty and "patriotism" this way:

Disrupting classes at more than half a dozen schools, students marched onto city streets waving Mexican flags and clutching red, white and green balloons as they chanted "Viva Mexico!"

Am I the only one who sees something distasteful in this form of expression?

This is the caption that follows one of the other LA Times photos:

Thousands protest against House-passed HR 4437, an anti-immigration bill that opponents say will criminalize [excuse me...but the fact that they came here illegally, breaking and disrespecting our laws, makes for the definition of a crime] millions of immigrant families and anyone who comes into contact with them.
(Bob Chamberlin / LAT)
Mar. 25, 2006
First off.....being "anti-illegal immigration" is not the same as being "anti-immigration". I don't know a single Republican leader or any of my fellow conservative bloggers who is "anti-immgrant". It is frustrating to me how those on the left constantly mischaracterize the argument, from "ban on gay marriage", "ban on stem cell research", to "anti-immigration". No one is pushing for those bans!!! AND NO ONE IS AGAINST IMMIGRANTS!!!

The issues of dealing with the illegal problem are complex. What I am truly sick of, are the multicultural idiots who don't understand the arguments against illegal aliens and want to framework it into a picture of racism, simply because the rest of us want our borders and laws enforced, and value the concept of national identity and see meaningfulness in the concept of "citizenship". You want to know who is racist? Groups like La Raza and MEChA are the racists. Quit fixating on race if you want to ever dissolve those color barriers!

I have no problem with being proud of where they're fun, but if they want to be Americans they need to
1) come in legally
2) speak English
3) and put the US flag above their nation of birth flag.

If they love their birth country so much, why didn't they just stay there?

Very well said!! I was getting a little irritated today listening to people saying that if you're for this bill you're a racist. This argument is so old. They need to come up with something new and better.

Two of my sisters-in-law are married to immigrants and the one got deported back to Pakistan because he came in illegally through Canada. You should hear their arguments on why we should just look the other way on illegal immigration. But they are both libs so what can you expect???

Well, of course they are carrying Mexican flags! They are Mexicans! What flag do you expect them to carry? Switzerland's?

They are not Americans. they are criminals. The flag they carry is the least of our worries.

If they love Mexico so much, let's give them a one way bus ticket to Tijuana.

If, as some claimed, they just want to "live the American dream" they need to ditch the Mexican flags.

You just try going down to Mexico and claiming you have the "right" to break the law.

anon...what's your point? Are you in agreement with the Guest Worker Program or opposed?

I'm for realistic solutions. I don't see it feasible to felonize, jail, and deport 11-20 million illegals. We don't have the resources and so many have rooted themselves so firmly (our fault) here for decades, that the relationships between illegals and natural borns is complex.

I'm disgusted though, with the ones out protesting who admit to being illegal and undocumented, and have the nerve to demand rights to being here. How do non-citizens dictate to politicians and citizens what we should and shouldn't do?

Guess how Mexico would react if we marched into Mexico carrying American flags and requesting government support? But who wants to go to Mexico?! Not even Mexicans!

Gaah! This entire thing is so frustrating!

Excellent post.

Another "Crock of Crap" cooked up by the Libs. Now I am mad at all of them up there in Congress. It seems the majority are spineless.

I am not against immigration...it is the illegal part...as you pointed out. This problem has been ignored for way too long. The arrogance of these people and their protest...just gets me.

My biggest issue is terrorism, and this plays a major role in that. We have no idea how many people are crossing our borders...that wish to do harm to us, besides the fact of it being illegal to cross...who knows how many already have a record.

Don't even get me started on the abuse of our government systems & their free ride.
A "FINE"...yeah right...hope they are not holding their breathe thinking these illegals are going to pay up or register.

Yeah, not meaning to be hard-hearted, but if you are so proud to be Mexican, why the heck did you sneak over here illegally? Maybe we should just give them all a one-way ticket back to that place they love... and it'd be cheaper than health care!

Vicente Fox and Mexico does nothing to discourage it; instead of fixing the corruption and poverty there, they export their poor to the U.S. And then of course, send a lot of money back to Mexico.

I'd love to help out every single good person in this world. And I'm sure most illegals are good people, looking for work and a better life. But having no sense of limitation, of standards to come in (not that many of our own natural borns deserve their citizenship)legally, of ASSIMILATION, is just insanity. Do these protestors think ALL illegals should be allowed in? Or are they, out of selfish self-interest because they are illegals themselves, or have familial ties to illegals including being sons and daughters to illegals, just want legal status applied for themselves? When your family should never have been here in the first place, but you've enjoyed the fruits of living here for much of your life....hard to give it all up and not put up a fight, even when you know you are in the wrong.

I want to be compassionate and realistic; but I'm also frustrated and pissed at many of these protestors; especially the young people.

At this point in time, the debate should only be about securing the borders. We tried immigration reform before and it resulted in new waves of illegals.
First, secure the border then hash out the details on how to handle/accomodate those that are already here illegally.

And yes, I get a viseral reaction when I see Mexican flags at the protests, hear talk of reconquista, see news reports of the Mexican military escorting drugs across the border, see the violence in Nuevo Laredo, hear about Vicente Fox's government aiding the illegals and claiming a say in our immigration policy.
