Nonsense with Andy Rooney

Sunday night, 60 Minutes had a decent piece on the success that is Kurdistan. Of course, this is still 60 Minutes we are talking about; and leave it to Andy Rooney to inject the kind of thinking that has helped earn 60 Minutes as the bastion of liberalism that it is. In a piece entitled "Let's Vote....On Everything!", Andy Rooney ponders,
Of the 1.4 million soldiers and sailors we have in the U.S. Army and Navy, 325,000 are stationed outside the United States. Do you know what they’re all doing out there? If we brought them all back home and then reduced our military by half, that would save us about $220 billion. That’s about $700 for each of us. If you got the money in cash, would you vote for it? Yes or no?
Need I really say anything here? I think it speaks for itself.

They are maintaining bases so that we can effectively exert or strentgh where needed.

I guess the question is:

Would you like $700 to lessen America's strength and impact in the world?

I would love to know how they got the 700 number. And for his information we have but a handful of bases still in operation around the world compared to 10-20 years ago.

Those serving abroad, what are they doing? A whole lot more than smacking their lips and expending hot air from their mouth.

While I could certainly use an extra $700.00, I have a question for Mr. Rooney:

Would $700.00 be enough to buy my freedom from the regime that has enslaved me and my family because there was no military to protect my freedom?

And now I have a question for you, Mr. Wordsmith:

How have you avoided switching to the new blogger so far? Because you haven't, I lost my first comment here and had to go sign in to post this one, whoich isn't as erudite as the former, but alas, I cannot remember my exact wording.

The $700 dollar figure comes from dividing the population (300,000,000) into the estimated budget for half the military ($220,000,000,000). the quotient is actually $733.33.

Andy Rooney is a simpleton if he thinks halving the force structure would half the DOD budget. But then, I've viewed Andy Rooney as pretty much a simpleton, anyway.

Rooney may have only been posing the question; but the fact that he even framed the question speaks volumes about his "books not bombs"- pacifist liberal think.

It was stupidly framed, anyway.

mark, I don't know how I've escaped so far. Early on, I tried to sign up when most people were still on old blogger. But it said it had problems converting one of my blogs, and could not do so at this time. I do have a sign in through my Google account and can create new blogs on new blogger; but somehow, I still have my old blogger account as well.

Btw, if you ever think you lost a comment, just right click and hit "back". In many instances, you will find your comment again. Just don't close your browser.

Somebody put Andy on oxygen so his brain can maybe get a clue.

Who was it, Mencken who said there is always one simple solution that is completely wrong.

Andy thinks you can arbitrarily RIF half the US military, kick those people to the curb, shutter all those bases, destroy many town tax bases when those bases go away, destroy companies that make military equipment, and everything will be peachy-keen.

On second thought, Andy needs to be in a retirement home.
