Our Generation's 12/7 was Their Generation's...

They understood 12/7. Do we understand 9/11?

"Of course, by 1945, Americans no longer feared another Pearl Harbor. Yet, we, in a far stronger and larger United States, are still not sure we won’t see another Sept. 11."

That is a terrible indictment on our current politicians! The military is willing and able; where is our national ability to mobilize a will to win? Like WWII, victory is the necessary outcome to prevent our children and grandchildren from having to fight this war over and over.

Forgetting is our downfall as a nation. What they did at Pearl and after in winning WWII should never be forgotten and the memory of their sacrifice should always be honored. Forgetting 9/11 is why victory is not being sought in this war only appeasement and cut and run! Both of which dishonors those who sacrificed in Penn.,Wash, and the Twin Towers!

I agree with Old Soldier; this country needs to unite with a will to win, or we are going to be in deep doo doo, but how to wake people up? Like I said on OS's blog, it's so frustrating! Do we have to suffer an attack worse than 9/11 to muster national unity? I'm beginning to think so. How terrible that is, and what it says about a large portion of this country, including politicians, is dispicable!

We suffered an enormous loss on December 7th which was followed by defeat after defeat throughout the Pacific matched with the atrocities the Japanese committed against our troops in places like Bataan.

Much of this could have been prevented if we had been better prepared.

I would like to say we had learned our lesson. We have on the one hand kept our military stronger, but we fail to unite the American people behind the need to confront evil BEFORE it strikes.

Many Americans just don't seem to understand this war, and what's at stake.

From that VDH article:

So far the United States has encouraged its citizens to shop rather than sacrifice. The subtext is that we can defeat the terrorists and their autocratic sponsors with just a fraction of our available manpower — ensuring no real disruption in our lifestyles. That certainly wasn’t the case with the Depression-era generation who fought World War II.

People aren't on board with this war, because they aren't in a war frame of mind; because they aren't making the sacrifices, there's no sense that we are in a fight for our lives.

They've also detached Iraq as separate from the GWOT.

I agree with Old Soldier; this country needs to unite with a will to win,

How much more nobly would Muslims salvage the reputation of their religion, if they were not of the CAIR-mindset, but of the Irshad Manji mindset? The patriotic Japanese-Americans during WWII did more good for Japanese-Americans by fighting in the war to prove their loyalties than did those who also chose to prove themselves American, by dissenting. Decades later, it isn't the dissenters who are remembered and celebrated; it is those who served in the 442nd all Japanese Battalion, fighting and dying for a country that interned their families.

It should be American Muslims leading the charge in denouncing Islamic terrorists.

Muslim-American soldiers who "get it":

Hamre, who also spoke at last year's event, told the group, "we
come together as people of faith who have assumed a larger
responsibility -- service to our country."

Hamre said the fundamental principles expressed in the
Constitution -- liberty, justice, equality and opportunity --
are the same fundamental values of Muslims, Christians and Jews.
"We are faithful to our Constitution only if we recognize the
religious freedoms and rights of all of our soldiers, sailors,
airmen and Marines," he said.

We are a military at war, but we are not a country at war.

Try explaining that one to your children - I do it every day, particularly when my husband is deployed.

The American Girl books have been both a boon and the bane of my existance, as my #2 and #3 daughters love them. They don't understand why Molly's world (the WWII doll/book) was so different.

I don't understand either.

It definitely should be, but they won't even speak out, so that's something we're never going to see. Their silence makes them suspect; why can't they understand that?

I always felt it was a mistake for Pres. Bush to tell America to act as if nothing was wrong and to continue "shopping" etc... I think he was trying to invoke Churchill's "business as usual" but it didn't come across that way.

wordsmith's remark that we are not in a war mindset and that we are not making the sacrifices that our parents and grandparents did is correct. That's why there is not will to win. The civilians are not involved.

GWB did not put us on a war footing from day one of this war. Big mistake on his part.

Now, this Congress will see to it that our forces cut and run. And the message that sends to the enemy will serve only to embolden the enemy.

What a contrast from 65 years ago!
